It’s crazy how many old cell phones and chargers most people have sitting around the house. I have a huge drawer in my office filled with nothing but cell phones and phone accessories. There must be at least six – and a couple of chargers for each of them. And a car charger or two. And some old PDA’s, too, now that I’m thinking about it. I’d love to get rid of all that stuff – but I never really had a clue of what to do with all of it. It’s not like I’m going to toss a bunch of cell phones in the garbage can.

Even though it’s colder than cold outside, it is late February and spring is just around the corner. And with spring comes the inevitable spring cleaning. And the best way to get a jump start on that spring cleaning? With a bit of de-cluttering. Start small, one closet, or one area or room at a time. Toss things that need to go. If you’ve got anything of value that you don’t want anymore you can give it to a friend or family member or donate it to charity.
Once you’ve gotten what you don’t want out of a space, start cleaning and organizing what’s left. Work slowly, area by area. That way, you are less likely to feel overwhelmed and quit before you’ve finished. I also like the ‘geographical’ approach to cleaning and organizing because it’s easy to see the fruits of all that hard labor as you progress.
As you work through your home, make note of all those little things that need attention and repair. Cracked outlet plates. Hardware, handles and hinges that need replacement. Indicator bulbs. Doors that don’t quite close properly. You get the idea.
But first things first. Start with a little bit of de-cluttering. And take the rest one small step at a time.

With winter in full swing, we’ve all got the windows closed up tight. Maybe even some storm windows and weather proofing to keep things sealed against the cold air. The problem is – without those leaks there’s no fresh air. Whatever’s in the air is just going to stay there. For months. Dust, allergens and who knows what else can just circulate through the house and stay there – until spring. Uck! And we’ll just keep breathing it in and out. And that’s not the only problem. Indoor winter air can be so dry – and drying. Lack of proper humidity can cause all knds of winter discomforts including dry and itchy skin, sinus problems including bloody noses, difficulty sleeping and even chapped lips.
Now’s a good time to think about getting an air purifier, filter and/or humidifier. Improving your home indoor air quality can only help you enjoy a healthier and more comfortable 2008.

All that time you spend cleaning and your house can look clean; but it may not be as clean as you think. Dust, mold and pollen can be all around the house and you might never know it. As the weather is cooling and we start to open the windows, we let in all kinds of small particles. Once we close the windows for winter, those particles stay behind in the air we breathe and can trigger allergies or, even worse, illness.
The best solution – clean air. That’s how you know your home is exactly as clean as it looks. Don’t forget to have your heating system cleaned and serviced. It’s also a really good idea to have your ductwork cleaned every couple of years. You can even add an allergen trapping filter to your furnace or opt for a complete air filtering unit. Either way – a small investment now can lead to a much healthier winter.
