My friend Julie is expecting any day now. Her nieces and sisters-in-law gave her an absolutely lovely shower a few weeks ago. They thought of everything. With summer flying by faster than the speed of light, I’m trying to make the most of every day we’ve got left. Especially because Little Guy and Tiny Guy are in town for a visit. We’ll be gathering at my place several times – for a barbecue and some family fun.
I’m planning ahead by a couple of days and making thing a bit easier on myself. I’m going to place a nice big online grocery order. Everything from soft drinks to condiments and tons of other things I know I’ll need. I will still probably wind up going to the store. Maybe even more than once. For odds and ends, more produce and the like. But at least I can get all the heavy shopping out of the way while I’m doing something else. Love that!

A pinata can add a festive touch to almost any kind of party. Kids love the traditional ’smash and grab’ candy feeding frenzy, but there are many other ways to enjoy a pinata. I admit it. I hate disposable plastic cups and paper plates. And it’s not an environmental thing, although I admit that bothers me too. I just don’t think disposables are nice. Or all that economical. There’s nothing worse that going to a lovely cocktail party and being handed one of those huge red plastic beer cups with a couple inches of Merlot at the bottom. Suddenly the party doesn’t seem so lovely. And the big gulp cup hardly adds to the bouguet of the wine.

For a cast of thousands, renting is a great option – but how often does that happen? My usual ‘big crowd’ is generally well into the twenties, maybe thirty, but not that much bigger. I gave up disposables. Instead, I shopped the restaurant supply houses like Instawares for simple barware, dishes and the like. I’ve got more than enough for my large gatherings and I really think that after a couple of years of not buying plastic cups and paper plates that my investment has more than paid for itself.
