It’s crazy how many old cell phones and chargers most people have sitting around the house. I have a huge drawer in my office filled with nothing but cell phones and phone accessories. There must be at least six – and a couple of chargers for each of them. And a car charger or two. And some old PDA’s, too, now that I’m thinking about it. I’d love to get rid of all that stuff – but I never really had a clue of what to do with all of it. It’s not like I’m going to toss a bunch of cell phones in the garbage can.

Did you know you can drop all your old cell phones, pagers, PDAs, chargers and other communications accessories at any Staples
store? They’ll recycle them and better still, they’ll donate a portion of proceeds to the Sierra Club
.
Clean your house – help green the planet! How great is that!

I’m craving cake. And I’m not afraid to admit it, either. I’m craving Red Velvet Cake with cream cheese frosting. And not just any red velvet cake either.

I want the dreamy and oh-so perfect Red Velvet Cake
from BakeMeAWish.com
.
Some people might think it’s unusual that I want to order myself a cake, but I justify in two ways.
This cake is really that good.
And, it’s a way giving back too. A portion of all sales is donated to the Make a Wish Foundation.

Legendary film actor and humanitarian Paul Newman died this weekend at the age of 83. He was nominated for a total of 10 Academy Awards and won an Oscar for his role in The Color of Money in 1987, but his career spanned many decades before and after that achievement. His rugged good looks and depth made him the perfect leading man in classic dramas like Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

To many people best known for his defining roles as the iconic anti-hero in legendary films like Cool Hand Luke, The Sting and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Much more than an actor, Newman was a successful race car driver and helmed a successful professional racing team. He was a love of good food and humanity – starting his own gourmet food company that donated all of its profits to charitable causes. To date the company, Newman’s Own, has donated more than $250 million to charity. His presence will truly be missed.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could eliminate all the unwanted junk mail that you receive every day? You can block spam e-mails easily, but it can be really hard to get all those catalogs and free credit card offers to stop filling your mail box. Yesterday I actually received THREE offers for the same credit card. No wonder the airlines are going broke – they spend like $1 every single day just trying to get me to sign up for a credit card I already have! OY!

Well here’s a way to stop the insanity. GreenDimes.com
stops your entire household’s junk mail and plants 10 trees on your behalf for $20. They also offer you the choice to remove only the catalogs you don’t want. You can help improve the environment by stopping the mail you don’t want to receive in the first place. The impact of this is huge. In just over a year of operation, they’ve stopped 3 million pounds of junk mail and saved/planted 1,000,000 trees. They have over 75,000 happy members and have gotten a ton of press – NY Times, Ellen, Good Morning America to name a few. 1st 5 million who sign up for Free also get a free issue of Plenty mag from greendimes.com

Last week I did some grocery shopping at a small international fruit market / grocery not too far from my house. I saw some pickles that looked interesting. I took them off the shelf to take a closer look. The front label was in English; the back label was in Arabic. On the English side, the package was clearly marked ‘Made in West Bank’. Just as I was thinking about how cool it was that in such a short time there are actually marketable products coming to America from West Bank and wondering why they don’t talk about that on the news – I noticed it. A Kosher certification. (OU). Now I really want to know why no one is talking about this on the news. I’m not going to pontificate about politics – I’m just going to say that I believe in peace and I think it’s AWESOME that there are products coming out of West Bank onto the American market and that I think it’s even more incredible that some of these products are Kosher foods.

So it got me thinking. What better way to promote peace than to go out your way to purchase products made by people who live in regions of conflict. Especially the artists and craftsmen who are dedicated to promoting peace, diversity and respect for the traditions of all people and cultures through the products they create.
