Lower price. Fewer calories. Fewer chemicals. Fewer additives. No artificial colors. Lower sodium. No cans or bottles means less work – less shopping, less schleppping, less garbage. And a decreased carbon footprint. Sounds good, doesn’t it? It’s possible. You can enjoy less expensive, healthier soft drinks and live a more eco-friendly lifestyle AND it’s less work for you! Yes, it’s possible.

With a Soda-Club Home Soda Maker
. Sleek and stylish, the home soda maker is a countertop appliance about the size of a coffeemaker that transforms water into fresh, fizzy seltzer/sparkling water at the push of a button. Soda makers operate without batteries, electricity or plumbing. Making seltzer and soda takes just seconds and requires no clean-up. A reusable, one-liter carbonating bottle (provided by Soda-Club) is filled with water and screwed into the machine fitting. A CO2 carbonator, housed inside the soda maker, adds carbonation at the touch of a button – as much or as little carbonation as you prefer. After carbonating the water, you can add one of over 25 different Soda-Club
sodamix flavors to make your favorite, great-tasting soda. Or add a splash of your favorite fresh juice for a completely natural sparkling beverage.

Sugar free flavors are available. As are low-sodium selections and energy drink formulas. All Soda-Club
flavor syrups are certified Kosher.

Start laying in your supplies early. Between the holidays falling mid-week and the terrible weather just about everywhere – don’t go out for your groceries and other household essentials – have them brought to you.
Depending on where you live, you probably have a variety of choices for delivery. Check it out – if you’re a home grocery delivery novice, you can even usually save some money on your first order.
And if you’ve experienced the wonder of grocery delivery services before, then you know first hand how wonderful it is to have everything delivered right to your kitchen counter! Grocery delivery is an especially good idea for anything big, bulky and heavy. From soda and mixers to cleaning supplies and laundry detergent – you don’t even need to bring it in from the car. You don’t need to do a thing.
To be honest, I was dubious in the beginning and tended to order only pre-packaged food items. I live in a Peapod
service area and I’ve got to tell you that once I tried ordering produce and other fresh items, I was hooked. I’m picky and even the tomotoes and peaches were just as good if not better than those I would have selected myself. I’ve even ordered fresh meat and fish and been happy every single time.
So stay home, log on, pick your delivery time and load up your shopping cart. I like to schedule an early morning delivery, around the time I’m about to pour my second cup of coffee. That way – by the time I’ve finished my second cup, everything is put away and what would have been a two-hour marathon trip to the supermarket is already off my list for the day!
Love that!

I’m here in the heart of apple country – Oregon. I attended a harvest market last week and tomorrow I plan on going again. They’re famous for a lot more than the apples here, of course, but it was the apples that really rocked my world.
There must have been at least 30 varieties of local apples from which to choose. Loads of ’boutique’ varieties from local growers. And lots of free samples! The tasting almost made it harder to choose, but since I knew I’d be able to go back again, I felt a little less pressure. My current favorite is the Hidden Rose – a small apple with light green skin, pink fruit and a sweet yet tangy taste. Like a Grannie Smith with honey. YUM! And it didn’t stop at apples. That was just the beginning! There were pears galore. Local wines. Smoked salmon. And lots more.

Hood River’s Choice Deluxe Fruit and Gourmet Gift Box
And guess who was there – at the local Columbia Gorge / Hood River farmer’s Harvest Market - along with all the local growers? TheFruitCompany.com
– they’re the ones who bring the freshest and best of Oregon to those of us who aren’t lucky enough to live here to taste it all in person!

This might just be the ultimate treat. Creamy and delicious. Sweet and slightly salty. The two taste sensations are married together in a world of – what else? Deep, dark, rich chocolate. 67% cocoa, to be exact. With the added depth of a new flavor twist – sea salt. The result is total indulgent snacking satisfaction.

There’s a new vegan organic raw food restaurant near my house. Okay, I’ll admit it, it’s not all THAT new, but it’s new to me as I went there for the first time with the Mad Angels when they were in town last month. The food was unbelievably tasty and I really felt great after that meal. Now I eat lunch there at least three times a week. And I’ve been eating better food at home too. I’d been reading about the so-called ’superfoods’ for quite a while now – and I have even incorporated some of them into my general eating routine. It was easy – lots of these magic foods are really yummy and readily available. Watermelon. Fresh coconut. Raw cashews. Organic chocolate. Goji berries. No, I haven’t turned into one of those vegan / organic / raw food / health food / granola / yoga / caffeine free nutrition nuts. Far from it – I still eat plenty of bad foods but the way I see it every little bit helps.

And the more healthy food I eat – the better I feel. Happier. Healthier. And much more energetic. Learn more about raw foods and super foods at Sunfood Nutrition
– and find loads of tasty ways to eat your way to better health. No need to take a total plunge into extreme eating – incorporating healthier foods into your diet is SO much tastier and easier than you could possibly imagine. And like I said, every little bit helps. Even one super nutritious meal a day is enough to make a really big difference.

One of the easiest ways to go green is to make a small investment in an organic cotton shopping bag. It folds up and takes up little room in your handbag and over the course of a year you alone can be responsible for HUNDREDS and maybe even THOUSANDS fewer plastic bags on the planet.

The only downside – some of those shopping bags are really ugly. Problem solve. Opt for the Dot Tote
from Fossil.com
. At $20 it’s a small investment in a greener future for all of us. And it’s totally cute, too!

Last night I cooked dinner for some friends. It sounds like a selfless act but I had an ulterior motive. Their baby, Dude, is now 6 weeks old and I wanted to come over and see the bath-time show! Anyway, I talked my way in with a delicious meal of maple/soy marinated salmon and rice noodles with bok choy and peapods. (Beware of natives bearing gifts, yes?)

Anyway, the salmon is something I’ve made a bunch of times before, but I stressed over it yesterday, not really remembering how much soy sauce relative to how much maple syrup. And then I had a flash thought that maybe I had actually used teriyaki or tamari and not soy sauce at all. It turned out great and we had a wonderful meal and Dude put on a terrific show. Then I nearly fell off my chair in laughter when I got an e-mail this morning that the Barefoot Contessa Pantry
maple teriaki sauce was a featured product this month at StonewallKitchen.com
. I don’t think I’ll ever worry about making my own marinade again – not when it comes in one simple package. It’s easier and it’s actually less expensive given the current price of a really good bottle of maple syrup.

It seems like everything is getting more expensive these days. With prices on the way up, savvy online shopping is your best bet. You don’t need to go anywhere and with gas at over $4 a gallon, reducing your driving can save you a ton of money. I actually paid $80 to fill my tank yesterday and I’ll be running as many of my errands as possible online from now on.

And starting from the top – if you drink a lot of coffee, then you can feed your daily addiction for less if you shop at CoffeeForLess.com
. Save on coffee from all your favorite roasters – Starbucks, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Lacas, Diedrich Coffee, Gloria Jeans, New York Coffee, Ellis, SENSEO, Wolfgang Puck, Golden Empire, Tully’s, Millstone, Melitta, Godiva, Bucks County Coffee and more. And a huge selections of teas – including Celestial Seasonings, Ashby’s, Bigelow, Oregon Chai, Tazo Teas and others. And flavored syrups, hot chocolates, service accessories, paper goods, espresso machines and more. For less. A lot less.

As far as I’m concerned, the best thing about summer is the fruit. Fresh and wonderful and totally in-season. Peaches. Nectarines. And my personal favorite – CHERRIES! YUM!

The season is shockingly short for many summer fruits, especially cherries. Take advantage now of the chance to eat orchard fresh fruits from the Hood River Valley of Oregon. Nothing like what you’d find at your local supermarket or even Whole Foods.

And don’t miss the wonderful yellow-fleshed Mount Ranier cherries – available for only a few short weeks every summer. Beyond delicious!
