I’m here in the heart of apple country – Oregon. I attended a harvest market last week and tomorrow I plan on going again. They’re famous for a lot more than the apples here, of course, but it was the apples that really rocked my world.

There must have been at least 30 varieties of local apples from which to choose. Loads of ’boutique’ varieties from local growers. And lots of free samples! The tasting almost made it harder to choose, but since I knew I’d be able to go back again, I felt a little less pressure. My current favorite is the Hidden Rose – a small apple with light green skin, pink fruit and a sweet yet tangy taste. Like a Grannie Smith with honey. YUM! And it didn’t stop at apples. That was just the beginning! There were pears galore. Local wines. Smoked salmon. And lots more.

Everybody I know is going Wii crazy these days. And I’ve hopped on the bandwagon. I was lucky enough to be invited to a few Wii marathons with friends and all I can say is Wii Wow! How fun! And what a great way to exercise, too. The Wii Fit is awesome. And the Wii sports. And the games. What a blast.

The weird thing is that you’d think that the infamous Wii Christmas shortage would be over by know – but it’s not. Game console systems can still be hard to find. And so can some of the accessories and games. I’ve been surfing like crazy and cannot report any place (other than eBay) where you can simply order a console that’s in stock and have it shipped right away. I have found a terrific source for games and accessories in GameStop.com. They’ve got HUNDREDS of Nintendo Wii items IN STOCK and READY TO SHIP. Duncan is graduating from 8th grade and big plans are in the works. In and among what I’m sure will be a week long celebration, she and I are going to see Wicked! I’m not sure which one of us is more excited.

Like always, I kind of waited until the last minute to take care of the ticket thing. By the time we decided on the day we wanted to go and I finally got around to shopping there were ZERO seats available at the box office or through Ticketmaster. I must admit I was a bit panicked. I’m not sure why I like Pocky so much. Maybe it’s because I actually lived in Japan as a little kid back in the 60’s when Pocky was first introduced. Maybe I saw an ad and was mesmerised as a three year old and hypnotised into loving Pocky. Who knows? Maybe I just tried it back then, loved it and have been addicted ever since!

It was actually called Chocoteck back then. The name was changed after a couple of years to Pocky – to honor the crunchy munchy sounds they make when eaten. It’s funny – sometimes I see Pocky everywhere I go – at Walgreens, 7-Eleven even the corner store. Never the new or more exotic flavors, of course. But enough to satisfy a serious Pocky craving.

And other times it’s just nowhere – except AsianFoodGrocer.com. In ALL possible flavors. Even new flavors that can be really hard to find here in the States. And you can even buy large boxes of single Pocky packs – perfect for munching and crunching with a cup of coffee. I’ve been known to carry them in my purse – just in case I have a Pocky emergency.

What To Do If You Want a Wii

It’s actually hard to understand exactly why this has happened. Worldwide holiday shortages of the Nintendo Wii gaming system were predicted as far back as April. You’d think that with 7 month’s lead time, Nintendo would have stepped up production. One article I read in Forbes Magazine included a comment that this is par for the course for Nintendo, they make a play for the year and stick to it. Regardless of demand and consumer response. Funny, you’d think that a company whose products are so innovative would be managed more flexibly. Go figure! Anyway, if you’ve been shopping for a Wii then you already know they care just about impossible to find in stores. Or online. At least not at anything close to retail price. The basic Wii starter kit generally retails for $249.99 and includes a five game sports pack, one controller and a couple of other accessories. The same Wii bundle is abundantly available on eBay, with dozens of auctions ending every hour. I’ve watched the auctions several times over the past few weeks. The $249.99 ‘basic’ bundle goes for anywhere from $400 to about $450. Many systems are being sold by well established eBay sellers with high feedback ratings, stated return policies etc. Many are not. I’d be very careful selecting your seller if you choose to go this route. Also make note of whether or not your selected Wii system includes the original purchase receipt. About a third of the posted systems I looked at included the original receipt – it’s worth having just in case. There are also lots of the basic Wii packages available with the eBay “Buy it Now” options. You should be able to snag the basic Wii package for $400 to $425. Don’t forget to compare shipping charges from seller to seller. Don’t forget that if you and the seller are both in the same state you may have to pay sales tax.

Another online option is one of these new ‘Wii only’ webstores that have cropped up in the last few weeks. I’m not going to post any of the site names here because I have no idea how reputable they are. If you go this route expect to pay at least $550 for a Wii package – the bundles from these stores generally include more items than the basic bundle but far fewer than the package price would imply. The markups are generally comparable to eBay – expect to pay about $150 over retail. Shop carefully, pay with PayPal or a credit card that provides purchase protection and try to choose a website that includes a phone number for customer service.

My next suggestion actually came from the guys at the Radio Shack near my house. Try Craigslist. The systems are selling for slightly less – $350 to $375. Choose a local seller, insist on picking the item up in person and if you’re not satisfied you can simply walk away.

If you absolutely cannot bear to pay more than retail – and who can blame you? – then you probably are going to have to wait a bit. Barnes & Noble is now accepting pre-orders on several Wii bundles that are expected to ship on 1/31/2008.

The Wii systema are theoretically carried at Best Buy, K-Mart, Sears, Target and a ton of the other ‘big box’ retailers. Most of these stores will not accept pre-orders and the bricks and mortar outlets do not maintain waiting lists. Check with your local store just to be sure. Radio Shack also carries Wii and many stores are keeping a waiting list. Another tip from my pals over there is that each time a store gets a bundle for release, they can’t sell it until Sunday. All the new Wii releases occur on Sundays – if you are ever going to get supremely lucky it will be first thing on a Sunday morning.

If you were hoping to gift a Wii system to your kids this holiday season, one ’sorry you can’t have it right now option’ is a special Wii gift card, available at Target in denominations from $25 up to $1000.

So that’s everything I know about the Wii shortage – hope it’s helpful. The games, accessories, controllers and other add-ons are abundantly available – which makes the system shortage even more annoying.

We’ve all got one of those lists. Not a grocery list or a ‘to do list’. It’s a really annoying list of items each of which might on its own require a trip to a different store. Mine is getting a bit out of control. I need to replace one of the timers for my garden lights. Plus I need a few new spot lights to highlight my three new trees. The universal control for my bedroom TV/cable/DVD etc is dead as a doornail and need to be replaced. I also need a battery for the smoke detector that is integrated into my burglar alarm. It’s a weird one and I always wind up having to make a special trip to Radio Shack to find it. I also need to track down two replacement dimmer switches for a bank of eight identical switches is a row in my living room. The switches are about 10 years old but they were extremely expensive and I don’t want to replace all of them so I need replacements. I also need to find some rather hard to find bulbs for some low voltage task lighting in my kitchen. And, of course, I’m searching for ANYTHING that will help me keep the squirrels from digging up and snacking on my bulbs! I hate all of these errands. It’s the kind of stuff that can consume an entire morning without any success at all.

My plan was always to take a first stop over to Smarthome. With any luck I’ll be able to get almost everything on my list without going to one bricks and mortar store.
