Even though it’s colder than cold outside, it is late February and spring is just around the corner. And with spring comes the inevitable spring cleaning. And the best way to get a jump start on that spring cleaning? With a bit of de-cluttering. Start small, one closet, or one area or room at a time. Toss things that need to go. If you’ve got anything of value that you don’t want anymore you can give it to a friend or family member or donate it to charity.
Once you’ve gotten what you don’t want out of a space, start cleaning and organizing what’s left. Work slowly, area by area. That way, you are less likely to feel overwhelmed and quit before you’ve finished. I also like the ‘geographical’ approach to cleaning and organizing because it’s easy to see the fruits of all that hard labor as you progress.
As you work through your home, make note of all those little things that need attention and repair. Cracked outlet plates. Hardware, handles and hinges that need replacement. Indicator bulbs. Doors that don’t quite close properly. You get the idea.
But first things first. Start with a little bit of de-cluttering. And take the rest one small step at a time.

We’ve had a ton of heavy snowfalls in Chicago this winter. More than usual, in my opinion. And with each snowstorm comes the snow removal. If you’re lucky, your street’s been plowed and all you have to face are the 6 foot dirty snow banks on either side of the street. And the possible death of a mailbox.

We’ve all got one of those lists. Not a grocery list or a ‘to do list’. It’s a really annoying list of items each of which might on its own require a trip to a different store. Mine is getting a bit out of control. I need to replace one of the timers for my garden lights. Plus I need a few new spot lights to highlight my three new trees. The universal control for my bedroom TV/cable/DVD etc is dead as a doornail and need to be replaced. I also need a battery for the smoke detector that is integrated into my burglar alarm. It’s a weird one and I always wind up having to make a special trip to Radio Shack to find it. I also need to track down two replacement dimmer switches for a bank of eight identical switches is a row in my living room. The switches are about 10 years old but they were extremely expensive and I don’t want to replace all of them so I need replacements. I also need to find some rather hard to find bulbs for some low voltage task lighting in my kitchen. And, of course, I’m searching for ANYTHING that will help me keep the squirrels from digging up and snacking on my bulbs! I hate all of these errands. It’s the kind of stuff that can consume an entire morning without any success at all.

All that time you spend cleaning and your house can look clean; but it may not be as clean as you think. Dust, mold and pollen can be all around the house and you might never know it. As the weather is cooling and we start to open the windows, we let in all kinds of small particles. Once we close the windows for winter, those particles stay behind in the air we breathe and can trigger allergies or, even worse, illness.
The best solution – clean air. That’s how you know your home is exactly as clean as it looks. Don’t forget to have your heating system cleaned and serviced. It’s also a really good idea to have your ductwork cleaned every couple of years. You can even add an allergen trapping filter to your furnace or opt for a complete air filtering unit. I was at a party last weekend and a friend of mine came out with the following statement: I don’t have any pets, but I think I might be ready for a Roomba. How funny is that? I was in stitches! Sometimes I just get carried away. I did a top to bottom spring cleaning in my kitchen. I was a scrubbing maniac! I cleaned under, around and inside all of my appliances and just when I was rounding the home stretch, I did it. I yanked out the bottom shelf in the door of my side by side fridge and broke it. The brackets that attach the shelf to the door snapped off. All four of them. Last summer when I was staying with Becky, Peanut, Ketchy and Duncan, the refrigerator started leaking. We narrowed the problem area down to a small plastic tube in the automatic icemaker. We turned the icemaker off and called the Maytag man. Two weeks and three service calls later we were no closer to making ice without a flood. Despite numerous calls to the service and parts departments and the confirmation from all three technicians that the problem was, indeed, the tubing we suspected, we just could not seem to get a technician to show up with the tubing to actually complete the fix. Completely frustrated we did what we always do - we sat down at the computer. We ordered a new tube and installed it ourselves.
