The First Step…

Posted in Cleaning, Closets, Home Maintenance, Housekeeping, Organizing, Storage at 6:06 am by Deb Savvy

Even though it’s colder than cold outside, it is late February and spring is just around the corner. And with spring comes the inevitable spring cleaning. And the best way to get a jump start on that spring cleaning? With a bit of de-cluttering. Start small, one closet, or one area or room at a time. Toss things that need to go. If you’ve got anything of value that you don’t want anymore you can give it to a friend or family member or donate it to charity.

HomeDecorators.com: Storage Solutions Shop Elfa Blue Lillian Vernon Online

Once you’ve gotten what you don’t want out of a space, start cleaning and organizing what’s left. Work slowly, area by area. That way, you are less likely to feel overwhelmed and quit before you’ve finished. I also like the ‘geographical’ approach to cleaning and organizing because it’s easy to see the fruits of all that hard labor as you progress.

But first things first. Start with a little bit of de-cluttering. And take the rest one small step at a time.

Snow Plow Casualty?

Posted in Home Maintenance, Mailboxes, Outdoor Decor at 12:24 am by Deb Savvy

We’ve had a ton of heavy snowfalls in Chicago this winter. More than usual, in my opinion. And with each snowstorm comes the snow removal. If you’re lucky, your street’s been plowed and all you have to face are the 6 foot dirty snow banks on either side of the street. And the possible death of a mailbox.

If your mailbox is currently a dented shadow of its former self, perched atop a dismal frozen pillar of gray snow – well, you’re far from alone. Many mailboxes are lost in the war against winter. Take this as a reminder – order a new mailbox now and you’ll be ready to restore your curb appeal to its pre-blizzard best as soon as weather permits.

Save on Fixtures for those Little Fall Fixups

We’ve all got one of those lists.  Not a grocery list or a ‘to do list’.  It’s a really annoying list of items each of which might on its own require a trip to a different store.  Mine is getting a bit out of control.  I need to replace one of the timers for my garden lights.  Plus I need a few new spot lights to highlight my three new trees.  The universal control for my bedroom TV/cable/DVD etc is dead as a doornail and need to be replaced. I also need a battery for the smoke detector that is integrated into my burglar alarm.  It’s a weird one and I always wind up having to make a special trip to Radio Shack to find it.  I also need to track down two replacement dimmer switches for a bank of eight identical switches is a row in my living room.  The switches are about 10 years old but they were extremely expensive and I don’t want to replace all of them so I need replacements.  I also need to find some rather hard to find bulbs for some low voltage task lighting in my kitchen.  And, of course, I’m searching for ANYTHING that will help me keep the squirrels from digging up and snacking on my bulbs! I hate all of these errands.   It’s the kind of stuff that can consume an entire morning without any success at all.

Smarthome, Inc. Smarthome, Inc. Smarthome, Inc.

My plan was always to take a first stop over to Smarthome.  With any luck I’ll be able to get almost everything on my list without going to one bricks and mortar store.  I don’t know why I had been putting it off, but I’m glad I did.  They’re having a ONE DAY ONLY promo today (9/17/2007).  Enter coupon code E25off at checkout and save $25 on orders of $100 or more.  Valid only on 9/17/2007.  Shop today so you don’t miss out!

Clean Air for a Healthy House

Posted in Cleaning, Health, Home Maintenance, Housekeeping, Wellness at 9:11 pm by Deb Savvy

All that time you spend cleaning and your house can look clean;  but it may not be as clean as you think.   Dust, mold and pollen can be all around the house and you might never know it.  As the weather is cooling and we start to open the windows, we let in all kinds of small particles.  Once we close the windows for winter, those particles stay behind in the air we breathe and can trigger allergies or, even worse, illness.

Bionaire.com Bionaire.com - 125x125 - save 15%

The best solution – clean air.  That’s how you know your home is exactly as clean as it looks. Don’t forget to have your heating system cleaned and serviced. It’s also a really good idea to have your ductwork cleaned every couple of years. You can even add an allergen trapping filter to your furnace or opt for a complete air filtering unit. Either way – a small investment now can lead to a much healthier winter.

Why Not a Robot

Posted in Appliances, Great Ideas, Home Maintenance, Housekeeping at 1:25 am by Deb Savvy

I was at a party last weekend and a friend of mine came out with the following statement:  I don’t have any pets, but I think I might be ready for a Roomba.  How funny is that?  I was in stitches!  But behind every great joke is an essential truth.  And his joke got me thinking.  Maybe I might be ready for a Roomba.  It feels like I’m always sweeping and cleaning and picking bits of fuzz off the floor.  Why not let a robot do that for me?

iRobot_Roomba 500 Series_300x250

Turns out that my timing was perfect.  iRobot has just launched their newest vacuum cleaning robot, the Roomba 500 Series and it’s smarter and more efficient than ever before! Improved anti-tangle technology means Roomba won’t get stuck on stuck on cords, rug fringe and tassels. New Virtual Wall Lighthouses provide the most thorough room-to-room cleaning. Improved, counter-rotating brushes pick up more dust and debris from carpets and hard floors. Improved side brush design grabs more debris from wall edges and corners. Improved filtration system reduces dust and allergen infiltration. Larger, bag-less dustbin collects more debris before it requires emptying. So all I have to do is….. well…. nothing. Love that!

Feeling Like Noah

Posted in Appliances, Home Maintenance, Housekeeping at 10:09 pm by Deb Savvy

It seems like it’s been raining for 40 days and 40 nights and I’m feeling a bit like Noah. There’s standing water in the street, huge puddles and pools of water in other low spots and the ground is soggy, soggy, soggy. Lots of people have had major flooding in their homes; I’m lucky to have dodged that bullet so far, but my house is feeling damp, damp, damp. So I’m heading over to Abt Electronics for a new dehumidifier.

When Spring Cleaning Goes Awry

Posted in Appliances, Hardware, Home Maintenance at 2:14 am by Deb Savvy

Sometimes I just get carried away.  I did a top to bottom spring cleaning in my kitchen.  I was a scrubbing maniac!  I cleaned under, around and inside all of my appliances and just when I was rounding the home stretch, I did it.  I yanked out the bottom shelf in the door of my side by side fridge and broke it.  The brackets that attach the shelf to the door snapped off.  All four of them.  As a temporary measure I re-attached the damaged shelf with white duct tape – useful in so many household emergencies – and then I surfed over to Appliance Parts Pros.  So quick.  So easy.  And I saved compared to what I would have paid to order a new shelf from the manufacturer.

AppliancePartsPros.com, Inc.

They’ve got genuine replacement parts for every kind of appliance from dozens of top manufacturers – including high end brands like Thermador, Bosch and others.  Their detailed appliance maps make it super easy for you to be confident that you’re ordering the correct component.  They’ve even got live support for more complicated repairs.  Looking to add an automatic icemaker to your freezer?  They’ve got the icemaker you need and will even talk you through the installation.

I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar

Posted in Appliances, Home Maintenance at 9:09 pm by Deb Savvy

Last summer when I was staying with Becky, Peanut, Ketchy and Duncan, the refrigerator started leaking.  We narrowed the problem area down to a small plastic tube in the automatic icemaker.  We turned the icemaker off and called the Maytag man.  Two weeks and three service calls later we were no closer to making ice without a flood.  Despite numerous calls to the service and parts departments and the confirmation from all three technicians that the problem was, indeed, the tubing we suspected, we just could not seem to get a technician to show up with the tubing to actually complete the fix.  Completely frustrated we did what we always do - we sat down at the computer.  We ordered a new tube and installed it ourselves.
