We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. It’s ALL about the food. Yes, a nice container is lovely. Of course it is. But you can’t eat that for a snack. For gift baskets that are sure to thrill – focus on the food. A really terrific assortment of treats is going to be just as exciting even if they’re placed in nothing more than a decorative shopping bag. Trust me on this one. We all have more than enough wicker trays, ice buckets and bread baskets.

A gift basket does not need to be ridiculously huge or expensive to make a great statement. Well selected items of a common theme can pack an impressive gift punch for as little as $30 to $40 and go up from there. Items from a specific country or region work together nicely, as do a set of items intended to go together as a complete meal. A selection of three or four similar items such as cheeses or smoked fish is also very well received. You can’t go wrong with coffee and pastry or chocolates. Champagne and caviar? Ooh la la! Wine, cheese and crackers always works well. Add some olives, dried fruits, nuts or chocolates and you’ve created a complete feast.

See what we mean? It’s ALL about the food.

If you really want to create holiday gift baskets that thrill, add a personal touch. Assemble the packages yourself and include a personalized item or two. Wine, chocolates, coffee and many other terrific gourmet items are available with your own personal logo, photo or message. Pack your items in something attractive but not expensive. If you are delivering your gifts locally, you can certainly opt for a decorative shopping bag and a bit of festive tissue. You might even want to add those same personal labels to the packaging.

Whether you decide to prepare your own or have them packed and sent by the pros, focus on the food and your gourmet gifts will be sure to thrill.

Last night a lovely crowd of us gathered over at Paula’s for a fabulous holiday feast. Lori, always creative with gifts and a super savvy shoppier in her own right, present Paula with one of the nicest hostess gifts I’ve ever seen. It was a terrific photo of Paula and the Professor. It was taken at a party Lori hosted not too long ago. And she put in in an absolutely beautiful frame. What a great gift idea, right? Paula was thrilled. And I was quite impressed. I’m always on the lookout for clever, inexpensive yet perfect gifts for every occasion. And the framed photo is all of that and more. It’s personal. Loved it!

Why not take a clue from Lori? Stock up and a few nice frames, keep track of the good photographs you have and gift them to your friends and family. Now that I’m thinking about it, I’m pretty sure Beck has done the same for me on occasion. And Lynne too. Where have I been? Does everbody know about this but me?

If you’re a crafter or baker (or amateur chocolatier, like me), here’s a great way to add personal style and a touch of professionalism to your hand made gifts. Why not add colorful personalized labels and tags? One of our favorite web sources for personalized paper produts of all kinds (including lovely cards, stationery and invitations) has a great selection of stickers and labels for all kinds of products. You can design your own logo or use one of their original colorful designs. Your homemade preserves, fresh baked treats or hand crafted memory book will be that much more impressive with this final signature touch.
