I Think I Could Do This…

Posted in Bathroom Fixtures, Coupon Codes, Hardware, Home Improvement, Kitchen, Who We Are at 8:43 pm by Deb Savvy

With the weather so terrible and the economy even worse and the holidays all falling in the middle of the week, most of us find ourselves spending more time than usual at home. At times like this, a great way to keep busy is to catch up on all those little nagging unfinished projects around the house. I’ve already attacked the closets. I’m working on some new storage shelves in the basement and up next…. I’m going to re-do my kitchen back splash.

I’ve long been a fan of those small multi-colored glass tiles. Beck has a glass-tile backsplash in her kitchen and it’s gorgeous! I’ve been doing some research and as it turns out – those little tiles come in sheets that are really easy to install. Ditto for river rock and other small polished stone tiles.

I actually think I could do this myself. And I’m going to try.

Not only will it be a great creative outlet for me, I’ll be improving my kitchen (and my home) and I’ll pay only a small fraction of what it would cost for a professional to come and do the job for me.

If it works out well, I intend to do a tile treatment on the wall of one of my bathrooms, too.

I’ll keep you posted.

Cheaper, Easier, Greener and Better for You

Posted in Appliances, Ecofriendly Shopping, Gadgets, Great Ideas, Groceries, Kitchen, Kosher, Shopping Tips, Unique Items at 4:31 am by Deb Savvy

Lower price. Fewer calories. Fewer chemicals. Fewer additives. No artificial colors. Lower sodium. No cans or bottles means less work – less shopping, less schleppping, less garbage. And a decreased carbon footprint. Sounds good, doesn’t it? It’s possible. You can enjoy less expensive, healthier soft drinks and live a more eco-friendly lifestyle AND it’s less work for you! Yes, it’s possible.

Soda Club USA

With a Soda-Club Home Soda Maker. Sleek and stylish, the home soda maker is a countertop appliance about the size of a coffeemaker that transforms water into fresh, fizzy seltzer/sparkling water at the push of a button. Soda makers operate without batteries, electricity or plumbing. Making seltzer and soda takes just seconds and requires no clean-up. A reusable, one-liter carbonating bottle (provided by Soda-Club) is filled with water and screwed into the machine fitting. A CO2 carbonator, housed inside the soda maker, adds carbonation at the touch of a button – as much or as little carbonation as you prefer. After carbonating the water, you can add one of over 25 different Soda-Club sodamix flavors to make your favorite, great-tasting soda. Or add a splash of your favorite fresh juice for a completely natural sparkling beverage.

Sugar free flavors are available. As are low-sodium selections and energy drink formulas. All Soda-Club flavor syrups are certified Kosher.

And After You Make That Soup Or Stew…

Posted in Cooking, Kitchen, Storage at 4:15 am by Deb Savvy

Making a big batch of soup or stew in your slow cooker is a great idea – except that unless you’re feeding a crowd that soup or stew can get a bit boring.

Enter FoodSaver.com. Systems like this are a fixture in most European kitchens, but for some reason we just don’t have the same interest in preserving our leftovers here in the US.

But a home vacuum packaging system from x is practical and economical. These days more than ever we’re all trying to save money. Not wasting food is a great way to start.

And here are a few more ways to save…

A Warm Idea…

Posted in Cooking, Kitchen, Practical Gifts at 2:59 am by Deb Savvy

It’s been snowing like crazy here just about all day long and shows no signs of stopping. I’m cold. I’m tired. I’m hungry. I don’t want to leave the house. And I’ll be hungry again tomorrow. And I won’t want to leave the house then, either. Such a dilemma…

Not really! I’m going to load up my Crock-pot slow cooker before I go to bed tonight and by the time I wake up I’ll have a nice huge pot of delicious split pea soup waiting for me. And then I’m going to load it up again – with a hearty chili.

What could be easier? I may never leave the house again.

This time of year, I always rediscover my c with absolute delight – like a little kid on Christmas morning. If you don’t have one, you might want to consider picking one up for yourself. It’s a great thing to have, especially in the winter. And if you have a friend who doesn’t have one – a Crock-pot makes a great gift.

I Can’t Believe I Didn’t Have One

Posted in Appliances, Gadgets, Gifts under $20, Gifts under $50, Hostess Gifts, Kitchen, Thank You Gifts at 6:54 am by Deb Savvy

My cousin, friend and soul sister Jeannie was in town for a visit not too long ago. We spent a wonderful couple of days holed up at my place drinking coffee, snacking, chatting and hiding from the rest of the world. I was making tuna salad when she commented on my supremely low tech (and older than the hills) hand crank can opener. She was surprised that I didn’t have an electric can opener in my otherwise completely pimped-out kitchen. I was kind of surprised, too. Not only that I didn’t have one. I was also surprised that it had never occurred to me that I might want or need one.

After she left I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Imagine my delight when just a few days later this lovely Cuisinart Can Opener arrived in the mail. A wonderful (and unnecessary) combination thank you and hostess gift. Woo-hoo! I’m a happy girl. She even included an adorable note about how much easier it will be for me to make my excellent tuna salad.

It’s funny how there are certain things we just don’t think of for ourselves. And I think small kitchen electrics like an electric can opener totally fall into that category. Making them excellent gifts for oh-so-many occasions. The ‘top of the line’ stainless steal opener that I received sells for $49.99; other styles and finishes are available starting at under $20. See them all at Chefs Corner.

Not THAT Kind of Lox Box

Posted in Appliances, Cooking, Fish and Seafood, Kitchen at 1:54 am by Deb Savvy

Back in the day, a Lox Box was a pretty popular fundraising event in my neck of the woods. Usually for a youth group or sports league – the kids would take orders in the neighborhood and deliver a Sunday brunch box that included lox, bagels, cream cheese. Maybe a tomato and an onion. Maybe a Sunday Times. Maybe a few little tchatkes. Nothing in the box was particularly delicious – mostly packaged stuff from the supermarket. But it was a fun idea and certainly added a little something to the day on which it arrived. But I’m not talking about that kind of Lox Box right now.

TheLoxBox.com The World’s First Home Lox-Maker

I’m talking about a magical box that allows you to make your own smoked fish right in your kitchen. Thrill your family with gourmet lox. Amaze your friends. The LoxBox is the first and only home lox-maker. It’s foolproof, easy and economical. You can make delcious lox and other gourmet smoked fish for a fraction of the price you’d pay at the market or deli. At only $29.95 it will pay for itself in just a few uses. And it’s made to your own special taste. Lox from the LoxBox is both heart-healthy and anti-arthritic with high concentrations of anti-oxidant omega-3 fatty acids.

The LoxBox Home Lox Maker is also a terrific gift.
