A moment of silence is in order for David Foster Wallace who was found dead in his home on Friday evening. He was an author, teacher and one of the most influential literary voices of our times. His writing was smart and funny. And super edgy. And so good. His novel Infinite Jest was named to the Time Magazine list of the 100 Best Novels from 1923-2005. He received a MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant the year after it was published.

While he received his greatest critical and literary acclaim for this 1000 plus page epic novel, Wallace is best known to most people (including me) for his short stories that appeared in magazines like Esquire, GQ, The New Yorker, The Paris Review and Harper’s, the stories were also published in collections like Oblivion, Girl with Curious Hair, and Brief Interviews with Hideous Men.

Since 2002, David Foster Wallace held the Disney Chair in Creative Writing and English at Pomona College.
Our hearts are with the family and friends at this time. His voice will be missed. And remembered.

Some very dear friends of mine lost their mother this week. Another friend lost her father. I found myself thinking a lot about the things we do for people when they’ve suffered a loss. Some people send flowers; I generally do not. I’m much more likely to drop off a home-cooked meal or to send a cheesecake or carrot cake if they’re too far way for me to actually bring them anything from my own kitchen. It’s how we take care of each other – food really is love.

But it’s also nice to provide them with a lasting memorial – when I lost my father, several friends (and my dentist, believe it or not) had memorial trees planted in his honor. I was truly moved by their thoughtful gesture and thought about those trees this week when I heard the news about my friends’ losses. I’ll plant have trees planted in their honor. A living tree is a wonderful symbol of the circle of life, an eternal memorial, and helps keep our planet greener.

What would you say if you found out you could eat delicious gourmet meals at home, without the work? Sounds good. What if you could just heat those meals in your microwave and be dining on a delicious dinner in minutes? Sounds good, too. And what if those meals were healthy and nutritious? And what if you could create those meals to your own personal tastes – choosing your entree, vegetables and side dishes and exactly how your food is prepared? Sounds phenomenal, doesn’t it? And we’re not just talking broiled versus roasted, here. We’re talking about gourmet meals to suit just about any dietary restrictions or style preference. Diabetic meals. Meals for kids. Pregnancy meals. Low carb meals. Low sodium meals. Healthy meals. Meals to promote weight loss. And all of them are chef-prepared gourmet meals. Dine wisely with DineWise

It’s all possible – and for far less than you’d think it would cost. Especially when you can get as many as 12 meals for free with your purchase. That’s right – you many never cook again!

The gift of a delicious meal is the perfect thing for anyone who’s in the process of moving, having a new baby or going through another big life cycle event. If you’re too far away to bring over something you’ve cooked yourself, sending a heat and eat gourmet meal is the next best thing.

Founded in May 2000, GourmetStation.com
was the first merchant to bring gourmet dinner gifts to the web. This innovative company was the first to offer “create a dinner” options much like a white table cloth restaurant menu plus pre-set favorite menus. They’ve got a huge variety of cuisine and menus including Parisian, Tuscan, Cajun, Fusion & Americana. And they’ve got great gift options too – including 3 course and 4 course dinner gifts from $69.99 and occasion dinners gifts (birthday, anniversary, etc.) from $89.99. Gourmet entrees start at $49.99. They also offer soup gifts, gift certificates, and dinner of the month programs.
The gift of a gourmet meal is a wonderful housewarming present. Timed to arrive a day or two after the move, once they’re settled enough to eat at home yet still not quite up to cooking, your gift is sure to thrill. A ready to heat and serve gourmet meal is also well received when times are tough – next time you’re looking for a condolence or sympathy gift, forgo the flowers. Send food. Feed their souls while you feed their bodies.

Fresh and fabulous. Big and beautiful. And unlike anything you’ll find in a supermarket. Orchard fresh fruits make an excellent gift for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and many other special occasions.

Fruit is a terrific business or housewarming gift and is a perfect choice for less joyous events as well. Fresh fruit is an excellent way to show someone you’re thinking of them after they’ve suffered a loss or if they are recovering from an injury or illness.

I love this idea! We’ve all had the occasion to send a charitable contribution in someone’s honor – usually as a token of gratitude or as a sympathy and condolence tribute. Do you ever wonder if your choice of charity is a cause that the recipient would choose? No need to worry about that anymore. Next time send a charity gift card. The value of your gift is 100% tax deductible and the recipient chooses the charity! How clever is that!
About 75 charities are currently participating in the program – including the Girl Scounts, Global Fund for Children, Make a Wish, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Simon Wisenthal Center, The United Negro College Fund, United Way, NAACP, United Jewish Communities, Goodwill Industries and many others.
