A wonderful thank you gift for a client has always been tough to find for under $30. The problem is that these days it’s frequently just not appropriate or possible to spend much more than that. $30 just doesn’t usually buy that much. I Can’t Believe I Didn’t Have One

My cousin, friend and soul sister Jeannie was in town for a visit not too long ago. We spent a wonderful couple of days holed up at my place drinking coffee, snacking, chatting and hiding from the rest of the world. I was making tuna salad when she commented on my supremely low tech (and older than the hills) hand crank can opener. She was surprised that I didn’t have an electric can opener in my otherwise completely pimped-out kitchen. I was kind of surprised, too. Not only that I didn’t have one. I was also surprised that it had never occurred to me that I might want or need one.

After she left I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Imagine my delight when just a few days later this lovely Cuisinart Can Opener arrived in the mail. A wonderful (and unnecessary) combination thank you and hostess gift. Woo-hoo! I’m a happy girl. She even included an adorable note about how much easier it will be for me to make my excellent tuna salad.

It’s funny how there are certain things we just don’t think of for ourselves. And I think small kitchen electrics like an electric can opener totally fall into that category. Making them excellent gifts for oh-so-many occasions. The ‘top of the line’ stainless steal opener that I received sells for $49.99; other styles and finishes are available starting at under $20. Caribou Cravings

I was lucky enough to receive some Caribou Coffee as a hostess gift and I’ve been sampling these divine brews over the last few days. Wow. This is some seriously great coffee.

So far my favorites are the Kenya AA, the La Minita Peaberry and the Roastmaster’s Reserve Brazil Poco Fundo – and I’ve still got a few more left to sample. We used to have Caribou cafes here in Chicago, but it’s been a long time since I’ve seen one. I had forgotten how much I love this coffee.

The Easiest Possible Thank You Gift

I recently referred a friend to a contractor who had done some work in my house several times over the years. It was the kind of question you answer for friends without giving a second thought – who do you use for…. Anyway, a couple of days later I received I lovely handwritten thank you note. I was impressed. And then I was pleasantly surprised. As I picked up the envelope to toss it into the trash I noticed that it felt a bit thick and heavy. I checked inside and what did I find?

A Starbucks card! How great is that? It’s the perfect thank you gift. Practical. Disposable. Consumable After all, even if you’re not a daily visitor – we all go there occasionally and my next few lattes are going to be on Mr. C! Love that!
