I was thumbing through a magazine last night and this adorable pair of ballet flats caught my eye.

Cute aren’t they?
Turns out they’re from the women’s collection at rockport.com
so that means they’re not just cute but that they’re super comfortable. Perfect for a late summer trip. Great with capri pants or a skirt or just about anything.
And affordable, too. The Rockport Azah Chalk Slip-On Womens
is only $85 and comes in chalk, black and brown.
Equally adorable and affordable and perfect for late summer / early fall travel is this Mary Jane.

Rockport Alterf Black Patent Dress Slip-on Womens
Just the thing to keep you walking all day and dancing all night!
And, of course, we’ve got the skinny on how to snag the best deal.

UPDATED 6/23/2009: We are sorry to report that Clear announced that it will be ceasing operations. IT was a great idea, allowing pre-screened and credentialed frequent travelers to move through special (shorter) security lines. But times are tough and as of the end of this month Clear will no longer be in business. Sad but true.

If you’re looking for more savvy tips to make the most of your next vacation, browse our Travel Archives or take a surf on over to our Travel Mall.

No plans for the weekend? Go to a show. Go see the big game. Even for so-called sold out events, as the big day approaches more tickets become available and prices start to go down.

Why? Because once the show has started, those tickets are worthless? The same tickets to a hot-hot-hot Broadway show that could cost as much as $300 each through a ticket broker several weeks before the event might be available for the same day or next day at a price well below face value. Ditto for concerts and sporting events.

If you have no plans tonight, tomorrow night or next weekend – surf around and see what’s available in your area. And if you’re about the head off on a last minute get-away… Take a surf and see what’s happening at your destination.

And if you’re wondering how you’d actually get your hand on those tickets if you need to use them tonight or tomorrow? No worries. You’ll most likely be able to pick up your tickets at or near the box office.

Last minute travel is an amazing bargain right now. Occupancy rates and air travel are at unexpected lows and there are some great discounts out there. Even if your budget and schedule don’t allow for a full-fledged vacation right now, you can still take advantage of some serious travel bargains.

Consider spending a night or two at a local luxury hotel or bed and breakfast. If you are shopping at the last minute you can save a bundle. If you are looking for a midweek stay you can often get one (or even two) nights free when you pay for the first night.

Like I said, there are some crazy bargains out there. Shop now and you’ve even got time to snag a deeply discounted New Year’s Eve package.

The Southern California leg of my journey (or trip-within-a-trip, as I like to call it) ended less than a week ago. Despite the two enormous suitcases I took with me when I left Chicago and even after such a short time back in Hood River, I am having some serious wardrobe issues. It’s really casual and laid back here – but with a distinct hipster edge. And now that we’ve entered the official fall weather season – the temperature varies widely and I need lots of layers. The obvious solutions – some basic tanks, tees and tops from Gap
, of course. Maybe an extra pair of casual capris. And a cozy cardigan. And a nice casual pullover. And…

I’m living in my Gap
Product Red v-neck tee – don’t know why I only brought one. What was I thinking? I’m having way too much fun to spend the time to drive to Portland to replenish my supplies.
As usual, I’m taking the easy way out – and ordering online directly from the source.

My recent travels included a long weekend in Southern California and we all know what that means. Hours and hours and hours on the freeway. Way too many hours. LAX. Palm Springs. Joshua Tree. Beverly Hills. Orange County. Santa Monica. San Diego. Lots of road time. I don’t know how people do it every day!
I did everything I could to make the most of those long hours. And it reallly wasn’t that hard. There were frequent stops at Starbucks
, of course. But it was the wonderful reading material that really made it easy. And fun.

A couple clicks of the mouse and I had all the reading material I needed to make the hours on the road fly by! And best of all with downloadable audiobooks from iTunes
, I had no added baggage and nothing to forget or leave behind in the hotel room or rental car. Instead of dreading each leg of my journey, I actually found myself looking forward to hopping back in the car so that I could get back to my vacation reading!
Love that!
Downloadable audiobooks would also be a great idea for a long flight or anyone who commutes daily by bus or train.
